Genie South Route

2 days on Genie Sacred Mountain's beginner-friendly south circuit — Litang, western Sichuan

2 days moderate 4,180 m max Jul – Sep

Genie Sacred Mountain (格聂神山, 6,204 m) sits in Litang County in western Sichuan — one of the great sacred mountains of the Khampa Tibetan tradition, and one of the most-rated trekking landscapes in western China. The South Route is the beginner-friendly entry into the Genie system: ~32 km across two days, max 4,180 m at Reti, alpine pastures with Khampa nomad horses, dense July-August wildflower meadows, and the iconic view of the Genie massif rising over the Hangda Camp at sunrise. The locals call this stretch the ceiling of western Sichuan's hidden landscapes.

The experience

  • Chengdu → Litang on Day 0 (preferred) via Kangding overnight for altitude staging — flight or 1-day drive options
  • ~32 km on foot over 2 trekking days — gentle gradients, no technical sections, max 4,180 m at Reti
  • Two trip variants2-day camping (this default) or 1-day light-hike on the Small Circuit (14 km, max 4,770 m at Blacksmith Mountain Pass) — talk to us
  • Khampa horse pastures, sunrise alpenglow on Genie, alpine wildflower density at its peak in July-August
  • Permits + licensed Garzê Tibetan operator + horse handlers bundled into the trip price

Why the South Route — and the Small Circuit alternative

  • Genie has multiple trek variants. The locals categorise格聂C / Genie C-route (Classic outer circuit, 7-10 days, expert), 格聂C+V (extended outer kora, 10-14 days, expert), 格聂南线 / South Route (this trek, beginner-friendly, 32 km / 2 days), and 格聂小环 / Small Circuit (14 km / 1 day, the lightest option).
  • The South Route is the right entry point for travellers who want the iconic Genie scenery (wildflower meadows, Khampa horses, alpenglow on the sacred massif) without committing to the multi-day high-altitude outer circuits. Western Sichuan locals consider this their #1 short-trek pick.
  • If a 2-day camping trip is too muchwe run a 1-day variant on the Genie Small Circuit — 14 km, max 4,770 m at Blacksmith Mountain Pass (铁匠山垭口), all of it in light-day-hike format with vehicle drop-off and pick-up. Different difficulty profile (higher altitude, shorter walking time). Talk to us about which fits.
  • Permits and accessGarzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, requires registered local operator + Tibetan guide. Foreigners benefit from organised-group status; we book the operator 4-6 weeks ahead.

Day 0 — Acclimatisation route into Litang

  • Litang town sits at 4,014 m. Going direct from Chengdu (500 m) to Litang in one day is doable but rough — most travellers arrive at 4,000 m with mild AMS symptoms that linger through Day 1.
  • Preferred sequencingChengdu → Kangding (2,500 m, 1 night) → Litang (4,014 m, 1 night) → trek-in Day 1 morning. Two-night staging splits the altitude gain and makes the trek itself much more enjoyable.
  • Alternativefly Chengdu → Daocheng-Yading airport (4,411 m — one of the world's highest civilian airports) and drive to Litang from there in ~3 hrs. Saves time but loses the staging benefit.
  • While in Litanggentle ridge walk above the town, the Litang Monastery (one of the great Kham-Tibetan teaching monasteries), Tibetan dinner. Early sleep.

Day 1 — Litang → Reti (热梯) → Hangda Camp (夯达营地)

  • Morning drive from Litang to the South Route trailhead (~2-3 hrs over high-Tibetan-plateau dirt roads). Meet the Tibetan guide and horse handlers at the trailhead.
  • Trek-in via Reti (热梯, 4,180 m) — the route's high point. Open Khampa pasture, scattered yak-tents, wildflower meadows at their July-August peak.
  • ~16 km on foot, gentle gradient, ~6-7 hrs walking with a long lunch break at a pasture rest house. Day-pack only; horse handlers carry the camping gear.
  • Camp at Hangda (夯达营地, ~4,000 m) — the trek's iconic spot, described by Chinese trekkers as 美到窒息 (breathtaking beyond words). Genie massif framed across the valley, sunset alpenglow on the snow ridge, herding-horse sounds across the meadow.
  • Camp dinner from the pack-train kitchen, gear sort, early sleep — Day 2 starts with the dawn alpenglow window.

Day 2 — Hangda → Genie West Slope Fairy Pasture → exit

  • Pre-dawn (0600) at the camp viewpoint for Genie sunrise — 10-minute alpenglow window when the snow ridge turns rose-gold. The trip's iconic moment.
  • After breakfast, trek out via the Genie West Slope Fairy Pasture (格聂西坡童话牧场) — the route's densest wildflower zone in July-August. ~16 km, gentle descent, ~6 hrs walking.
  • Return to the trailhead by mid-afternoon. Drive back to Litang (~2-3 hrs) for hot shower + dinner + the night's deserved sleep.
  • Day 3+ exit optionsLitang → Daocheng-Yading airport → fly Chengdu, OR Litang → Kangding → Chengdu (1-day drive).
Practical details
  • Fitnessmoderate. Comfortable hiking 16 km a day with light pack at altitude. No technical sections; the difficulty is sustained walking at 4,000-4,180 m.
  • Altitudemax 4,180 m at Reti; sleeps at 4,014 m (Litang) and 4,000 m (Hangda Camp). Two-night staging (Chengdu → Kangding → Litang) before the trek is strongly recommended for travellers arriving from sea-level.
  • Best windowJuly-August is peak. Wildflower meadows at maximum density; alpine pastures green; clear-skies probability highest. June and September workable but with reduced wildflower content. Avoid late October onwards (snow accumulation) and the Tibetan winter (December-March, severe cold + closed trails).
  • Permits + logisticsGarzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture requires registered local operator + licensed Tibetan guide. Pack-horses carry camping gear (you carry day-pack only). All bundled into the trip price; we book 4-6 weeks ahead.

Common questions

Before you book

01 Is this trek really beginner-friendly?

Yes — by trekking-China standards. No technical sections, no rope or crampons, gentle gradients, mostly meadow terrain rather than scree. The difficulty is altitude (4,000+ m sleeps, 4,180 m max) and the length of the walking days (16 km × 2). Strong recreational walkers comfortable with one full day's hiking handle the route fine. Families with older kids (10+) who can manage 16 km in a day + camping comfortably also do well.

02 What's the difference between South Route and Small Circuit?

South Route (this trek) is 32 km / 2 days / max 4,180 m / camping at Hangda. Small Circuit is 14 km / 1 day / max 4,770 m at Blacksmith Mountain Pass — no camping, all driven in and out. Small Circuit is shorter time-wise but with a higher altitude pass, so the difficulty profiles are different. Pick South Route if you want the camping experience, the wildflower density, and the iconic Hangda Camp moment. Pick Small Circuit if you want a 1-day trip with no overnight on the trail.

03 When exactly should I go?

Late July to mid August is the wildflower peak — the meadows are at maximum density and the locals' "川西秘境的天花板" (the ceiling of western Sichuan's hidden landscapes) framing is most earned. Late June and early September are still excellent. May and October are workable but wildflowers have not yet (or no longer) reached their peak. Avoid late October to early May — high-altitude pasture trails close due to snow + the camping experience becomes hostile in sub-zero overnights.

04 Can we combine this with West Sichuan or Yading?

Yes — Genie South Route slots cleanly into the West Sichuan Sky-Road style itineraries. Standard sequencing: Chengdu → Kangding → Litang (this trek) → Daocheng-Yading (3 more days at Yading's Three Sacred Peaks circuit) → fly out from Daocheng-Yading airport. Total 8-10 days for the combined Sichuan western-Tibetan-plateau loop. Talk to us about combinations; this kind of multi-trek string-together is exactly what we do.
