01 Where exactly is Arro Khampa inside Shangri-La?
Inside Dukezong Ancient Town, on a quiet cobbled lane directly below the prayer-wheel temple and three minutes' walk from Sifang Square. The hotel is five minutes from Diqing Shangri-La airport by transfer; most guests arrive after a flight from Kunming or Lijiang. Songtsam Meili and Poodom Meili sit a 3.5-hour drive further west at Meili Snow Mountain — Arro Khampa is the old-town base before or after.
02 How serious is altitude at the property?
Dukezong sits at 3,200m. Most guests feel mild altitude on arrival day — light-headedness, broken sleep, breath shortness on stairs. We brief travellers to arrive without overnight from sea level; ideally route via Lijiang (2,400m) for one night first. The hotel keeps oxygen machines and pillows in every room and the front desk runs an informal pulse-ox check the first morning. By day two most travellers are fine for Songzanlin and the Pudacuo plateau.
03 When is the best time to stay?
October to early December for crisp clear days and the first sightings of snow on the upper Meili range. March to May for rhododendrons in flower across the Pudacuo trails and fresh snow on the high passes. June to August sees the rainy season — the old town is still atmospheric in cloud-and-rain weather but the longer day hikes get unreliable. Year-round in-floor heating means December and January are usable for travellers who don't mind cold mornings.
