Inside Songtsam Meili

Staying at Songtsam Meili
01 How serious is the altitude at Songtsam Meili?
The lodge sits at 3,600m and most guests feel mild altitude effects on arrival night — light-headedness, broken sleep, shorter breath on stairs. We schedule arrival from Shangri-La town (3,200m) or after a stop at lower elevation, never directly from sea level. Every room has an oxygen pillow; the lodge keeps medical-grade canisters at reception. Most guests adjust within 24 hours and are hiking by day two.
02 When is the best time to see the Meili Snow Mountain range from the lodge?
October to early December and March to May for the cleanest dawn views of Kawagarbo (6,740m) — the sacred peak that's never been summited. October–November bring crisp dry mornings; late winter brings fresh snow on the upper slopes. Avoid the wet season (June–August) when the peaks are usually shrouded in cloud and the valley road becomes landslide-prone.
03 How do I get to Songtsam Meili from Shangri-La town?
It's a 3.5-hour drive from Shangri-La town along the G214, climbing through the Baima Snow Mountain pass (4,292m) before descending to the Lancang river valley and crossing into Tibetan Yunnan. We provide a private vehicle with a driver who knows the road; the journey itself is one of the most beautiful in southwest China — high prayer-flag passes, deep gorges, and the first sighting of Kawagarbo across the valley.
