Chengdu Family Adventures
Pandas, Bronze Age aliens, teahouse lanterns and the snow valleys 3 hours west — Chengdu, built for travelling families
Chengdu is an unusually easy city to travel with children — flat, walkable, with a metro that connects every attraction and a food culture that finds something for everyone. The five experiences here range from a 25-minute taxi (panda base) to a half-day drive away (Sanxingdui, Siguniang, Shudao), from sea-level walks to 3,200 m valleys. What links them is that none require specialised fitness, all have genuine 'wow' moments for kids, and most adults find them more interesting than they'd expected.

Giant Panda Base — the morning visit
All ages Chengdu (北郊熊猫基地)The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding sits 10 km north of the city. Gates open at 07:30; the pandas are most active in the first 90 minutes, when keepers deliver fresh bamboo. By midday most are asleep, and they stay that way. Skip the famous Hua Hua queue, start in the old east villa zone for the closest viewing, exit West Gate by lunchtime. The morning is everything.

Sanxingdui Museum — Bronze Age aliens
6+ Guanghan (60 km north of Chengdu)Sanxingdui is the best answer to 'what do you show children who think history is boring.' A 3,000-year-old civilisation, no obvious connection to anything else in ancient China, and bronze masks with extruded-stalk eyes that look like they were imagined by someone who'd never seen another culture. The new 2023 museum building stages the artefacts in dramatic low-key light. 3–4 hours minimum; pairs naturally with the panda base for a full day via the 13:00 direct bus from the base's West Gate.

City walks — Jinli, Kuanzhai, Taikoo Li, Chunxi
All ages Central ChengduFour historic or mixed-use Chengdu street precincts within 4 km of each other in the central city. Jinli for red-lantern courtyards and Sichuan street snacks after sundown. Kuanzhai Alley for Qing-dynasty grey-tile lanes and outdoor teahouse afternoons. Taikoo Li for contemporary design built around the ancient Daci Temple. Chunxi Road for the Chengdu city buzz at scale. Any two combine well in a single afternoon.

Siguniang Mountain — Shuangqiao Valley day-trip
6+ Rilong Town (3.5 hrs from Chengdu)Siguniang (四姑娘山, Four Girls Mountain) sits 220 km west of Chengdu. Of its three valleys, Shuangqiao (双桥沟) is the family-friendly one — a flat-bottomed paved-road valley starting at 3,200 m, with electric cart service covering most of the 34 km round-trip and snow peaks above 5,000 m visible from the valley floor. No serious hiking required; kids ride the cart between stops, walk the short sections, and see yaks in alpine meadow.

Shudao — the 2,000-year-old cypress road
8+ Jiange (3.5 hrs from Chengdu)古蜀道 (the Sichuan Road) is the ancient mountain route network that connected Sichuan to the north. The 金牛道 section in Jiange runs through a forest of Qin-dynasty cypress trees — some over 2,000 years old, planted along the original road surface. Flat, well-paved, signposted, free to enter. The 13 km short route from Lanma Wall to Chaoshou Inn is the family-friendly option. 3.5 hours of driving each way is the main commitment; kids who travel well in cars find this an excellent day-trip.
How the days typically run
- Day 1 — Arrive Chengdu, hotel check-in. Easy evening at Jinli for lanterns + Sichuan street food.
- Day 2 — Panda Base at 08:00 opening (East Gate). Exit West Gate by 12:30, direct bus to Sanxingdui at 13:00. Museum until 18:00. Train back to Chengdu, dinner at Jiuyanqiao.
- Day 3 — Slow morning, Kuanzhai Alley walk and teahouse lunch. Afternoon at Taikoo Li.
- Day 4 — Charter car to Siguniang Mountain (3.5 hrs). Shuangqiao Valley electric-cart circuit. Overnight in Rilong Town for the altitude adjustment.

- Day 6 (optional) — Shudao day-trip via the 13 km short route from Lanma Wall.

Practical details
- PaceGenuinely easy for families. Morning early-starts on the panda+Sanxingdui combo day (Day 2) and the Shudao or Siguniang drive days; everything else moves at a relaxed pace.
- AltitudeChengdu sits at ~500 m — no acclimatisation needed for the city days. Siguniang Mountain valleys start at 3,200 m; if flying directly from sea level, the first afternoon in Rilong should be a rest day, not a hike.
- Best windowMarch–May and September–November. Spring brings blossom and mild temperatures; autumn brings the strongest weather and the best Siguniang colour. Summer is humid and hot in the city but Siguniang is at its greenest. Winter is quieter at the panda base and Sanxingdui but Siguniang has snow on the upper valleys.
- TicketsPre-book the panda base online (¥55 per adult). Sanxingdui is mostly walk-up except Chinese national-holiday peaks. Siguniang entry tickets purchased at the scenic-area gate; the electric cart in Shuangqiao Valley is extra.
- KidsAll activities work for ages 5+. Panda base, Sanxingdui, and city walks suit all ages including toddlers. Siguniang's Shuangqiao Valley is family-friendly; the other two Siguniang valleys (Haizi, Changping) involve sustained altitude walking and are best for older kids and teens. Shudao is fine for kids 8+ who travel well in cars.
- StaysTemple House Chengdu is the design-forward city base (Taikoo Li precinct). For Siguniang Mountain, basic guesthouse in Rilong Town for an overnight.
Before you book
01 Can I do the panda base and Sanxingdui in one day?
Yes — and this is the recommended way to do it. Enter the panda base at 08:00 opening, exit West Gate by 12:30, take the 13:00 direct bus to Sanxingdui (¥25 per person), arrive ~14:15, museum until 18:00, train back from Guanghan North to Chengdu East. Total walking: ~30,000 steps. Plan for an early night.
02 Which Siguniang valley should we choose with young children?
Shuangqiao Valley (双桥沟) without question — flat road, electric cart service the whole way, snow peaks visible from the valley floor, no significant hiking required. The other two valleys (Haizi and Changping) involve sustained walking at altitude and are better suited to older children, teens, or trekkers.
03 Is the Shudao day-trip suitable for kids?
The 13 km short route is flat and well-paved with ancient cypress canopy the whole way — totally manageable for school-age kids. The main commitment is the 3.5-hour drive each way. For under-8s who don't travel well in cars, the drive can be harder than the walking; for 8+ kids who travel well, it's an excellent day.
04 How many days do we need for everything?
Four days minimum (Day 1: arrive + Jinli; Day 2: Panda + Sanxingdui combo; Day 3: city walks; Day 4: Siguniang day-trip). Six days is more comfortable — adds Shudao on Day 5 and a downtime afternoon between Siguniang and the next experience. Seven days lets the family eat their way through the city properly and includes weather flexibility for the mountain day.
