Common questions

Planning your Chengdu trip

01 How many days do I need in Chengdu?

Two to three days. One for the Giant Panda Research Base (go at 8:30am when they're active), one for Kuanzhai Alley and Wide/Narrow old streets, plus a teahouse afternoon at Renmin Park. Add a third for a Sichuan opera performance, a day trip to Leshan Giant Buddha (1 hour by high-speed rail), or our favourite — a proper málà hot pot crawl in Jinli.

02 What's the best base for seeing Chengdu on a private trip?

We usually recommend The Temple House in Jinli — Swire's House Collective property beside the 1,000-year-old Daci Temple. Quiet, architect-led, walking distance to Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li. Alternatively the Ritz-Carlton at Tianfu Square if you need Michelin dining in-house, or the Niccolo for skyline views. All three anchor well for a Sichuan loop onward.

03 Is Chengdu a good launching pad for West Sichuan?

Yes — it's the only real launching pad. Every West Sichuan destination connects via Chengdu: Jiuzhai Valley (1h flight), Daocheng Yading (3-day drive or 1h flight), Bipeng and Siguniang (3.5h drive), Seda's Larung Gar (2-day drive). We recommend 2 nights in Chengdu at the start to shake off jet-lag before pushing into altitude.
