Arrive & Lower Valley Exploration

  • Shuzheng Valley — Reed Lake, Spark Lake, and Shuzheng Waterfall along the valley floor boardwalk
  • Tibetan villages — traditional wooden settlements with prayer flags and butter-lamp shrines at the valley entrance
Snippet 02

Huanglong

  • Five Color Pool (五彩池) — Huanglong's terminal pool at 3,600m, where mineral-rich spring water shifts from jade to deep turquoise depending on light and season
  • Over 3,400 travertine terraced ponds cascade 3.5 km down the valley floor — one of the largest calcite formations on earth
  • Walk up from the valley base or take the cable car to the top, then descend through the pools on the boardwalk
  • Colours are deepest in late spring (May) and early autumn (September–October); the site is typically closed December to March
  • A half-day or full-day add-on from Jiuzhai via the same airport — the two parks are about 100 km apart

Upper Valleys: Rize & Zechawa

  • Rize Valley — Mirror Lake, Pearl Shoal Waterfall, and Five Flower Lake (the park's most photographed view, where submerged logs are visible through the turquoise surface)
  • Zechawa Valley — Long Lake (Changhai) at 3,103m, the highest and largest lake in the park, often dusted with snow even in mid-autumn
  • Boardwalk walking between lakes with electric shuttle buses for the longer valley sections

Autumn colours

  • Fiery maples and golden larches frame every lake from late September to late October — the park's peak season for colour and photography
Common questions

Planning your Jiuzhai Valley trip

01 When is the best time to visit Jiuzhai Valley?

Mid-September to early November is the headline window — the alpine maples turn the entire valley red, gold and copper, framing the famously turquoise lakes. Late April to early June is the second-best, with snowmelt running clear and rhododendron flowering in the upper valleys. Avoid Chinese Golden Week (October 1–7) — daily entry is capped and the park sells out. We book permits 2+ months ahead for autumn travel.

02 How many days do I need in Jiuzhai Valley?

Two full days inside the park is the minimum — one for the Y-shaped main valley (Shuzheng, Nuorilang, the Long Lake spur) and one for the parallel Rize valley with the Five-Flower Lake and Pearl Shoal Falls. Add a third for Huanglong's calcified terraces, an hour's drive away. Most guests stitch Jiuzhai into a 7–10 day Sichuan loop via Chengdu.

03 Do I need a permit or advance booking for Jiuzhai?

Yes — Jiuzhaigou enforces a daily visitor cap (currently 41,000 in peak season, lower off-season). Tickets must be reserved online in advance with passport details, and slots sell out 4–8 weeks ahead in autumn. We handle the booking, time-slot selection, and shuttle reservations for every guest, plus the separate Huanglong permit if you're adding that day.

04 How does Jiuzhai pair with the rest of Sichuan?

Jiuzhai is the natural climax of a Chengdu–West Sichuan loop. From Chengdu, fly into Jiuzhai-Huanglong airport (1h), spend 3 nights, then drive the high road south through Songpan grasslands toward Bipeng Valley & Siguniang Mountain. Our Chengdu hiking tour stitches it together as a 10-day private circuit.
