Sichuan's Accessible Alpine Weekend

3 days

road trip alpine lakes autumn colour hot springs signature trek

A 3-day alpine road trip within easy reach of Chengdu — Bipeng Valley's mirror lakes under jagged snow peaks, the Li–Xiao scenic road over the Qionglai range, and two nights at Siguniang Mountain with a hot-spring resort in the middle. Finish with the Shuangqiao Valley stupas, or lean into the classic 3-day Changping–Bipeng traverse (长穿毕) for something more serious.

Snippet 01

Chengdu to Bipeng Valley

  • Morning departure from Chengdu — 3.5 hours on the Duwen Expressway to Li County, climbing into the Qionglai range.
  • Arrive at Bipeng Valley (毕棚沟, 2,400m entrance) — shuttle bus in, hike the lower boardwalk loop through golden larch.
  • Mirror-still alpine lakes backed by sharp snow peaks — the accessible alternative to Jiuzhaigou, without the crowds.
  • Dragon King Lake (3,800m) and the upper meadows — turn-around point depends on weather and your legs.
  • Overnight at Bipeng Resort inside the valley, so you can catch sunrise on the water before the day-trippers arrive.
Snippet 02

Li–Xiao Road to Siguniang Mountain

  • Morning walk back along the lower Bipeng boardwalk for one last frame — then back into the car.
  • Cross the Qionglai range on the Li–Xiao Road (理小公路) — a high-mountain scenic route over the back of Siguniang, seldom crowded.
  • Summit-pass stops at 4,500m+ yak pasture, jagged peaks, and the sound of the wind.
  • Drop into Rilong township at the foot of Siguniang (3,200m). Check into a hot-spring resort and soak the drive out of your legs.
  • Dinner in the village — yak hotpot, plateau potato, Sichuan heat — and an early night before the hike day.
Snippet 03

Siguniang Mountain Hike

  • Early start into Shuangqiao Valley (双桥沟, 3,500m) electric-shuttle corridor, step off wherever the light is right.
  • Gentle boardwalk loops through larch groves, prayer flags catching wind, Tibetan stupas in autumn gold.
  • The Four Sisters (四姑娘山) — four sharp peaks rising to 6,250m, framing the valley the whole way.
  • Option to ride horses across the meadow with a local Tibetan wrangler, or push higher on foot toward the glacier viewpoints.
  • Drive back to Chengdu in the late afternoon — or push onward (see below).
Snippet 04

Continue West to Genie South

  • Rather than loop back to Chengdu, roll straight on to the [Genie South route](/destination/genie-south/) — West Sichuan's sacred south.
  • From Siguniang, rejoin the G318 at Kangding — then Lenggacuo, Xinduqiao, and on to Mt Genie (6,204m) and the Eye of Genie.
  • Stacks cleanly onto this 3-day trip as a 7-day 'Sichuan alpine loop' — mirror lakes to sacred peaks without backtracking.
Snippet 05

Signature Trek: Changping–Bipeng Traverse (长穿毕) — 3 days

  • A 3-day, 2-night alpine traverse — the most iconic trek in West Sichuan. You enter at Changping Valley beneath the Four Sisters, cross a 4,668m prayer-flag pass, and walk out through Bipeng Valley's larch forests on the far side.
  • ~40 km on foot total. Pack horses carry group gear and food; you carry a day pack. Overnight at tented camps at Muzuozi and Chazigou Wei.
  • Grade intermediate. No technical mountaineering, but real altitude and real weather — book with a buffer day in case the pass is snowed shut.
  • Best windows June wildflowers (meadows in full bloom) or early-to-mid October autumn larch (electric gold).
  • We run this as a guided, catered trek English-speaking mountain guide, horse team, permits, and a back-up 4WD on standby at both trailheads. Ask us about dates.
Common questions

Planning your Bipeng Valley & Siguniang Mountain trip

01 When is the best time to visit Bipeng and Siguniang?

Mid-October to early November for the golden larch — Bipeng's signature 'Swiss Alps in China' look. Late April to mid-June is the second window: rhododendrons in the upper valleys and new snow still on the Four Sisters. Avoid Chinese Golden Week (1–7 October) when the valley caps entry. Winter is dramatic and quiet but the 4,500m Li–Xiao mountain pass sees closures after heavy snow.

02 How do I get to Bipeng and Siguniang from Chengdu?

It's a 3.5-hour drive on the Duwen Expressway to Bipeng Valley's entrance (2,400m), then a scenic crossing of the Qionglai range via the Li–Xiao Road down to Rilong township at the foot of Siguniang (3,200m). We drive the whole loop in a private vehicle with a driver who knows the mountain pass — it's one of the great short Sichuan road trips. Fly into Chengdu.

03 How does this pair with the rest of West Sichuan?

Most guests do the 3-day loop and return to Chengdu. But if you want more: roll straight on from Siguniang to the Genie South route via Kangding for a 7-day 'Sichuan alpine' circuit — mirror lakes to sacred peaks without backtracking. Or stitch into our Chengdu hiking tour with Jiuzhai added.
