  • Local Guilin rice-noodle supper at a neighbourhood shop and early rest

Day 2 — Yangshuo valleys

  • Sunrise bamboo raft on the Yulong River's quietest reach — drifting past karst towers in the early mist before the day tours arrive and the water loses its stillness
  • Valley loop hike through farmland and old stone bridges — karst peaks rise in every direction and the scale of the landscape takes time to absorb

  • Dawn terrace loop — the first light on flooded paddy terraces in spring, or golden harvest in autumn, is among Guilin's finest photographic moments
  • Farm breakfast with the village family; homemade pickles, congee and strong mountain tea
  • Village craft stop for rice-wine tasting and a browse of hand-woven Yao textiles before the transfer to Guilin airport or rail station
Trip essentials
Culinary & ritual notes
  • Country cooking class hands-on session with a local home cook using terrace herbs and fresh bamboo — make bamboo-tube rice (竹筒饭), bamboo-shoot stir-fry and Guilin chilli paste. The chilli paste is easy to replicate at home.
  • Longji farm table a Zhuang or Yao farmhouse lunch with slow-cooked smoked pork, mountain vegetables and local rice wine poured by the host family. Simple and genuinely good.
  • Evening tea on the terrace settle-in tea at dusk from your lodge or riverside deck — Guangxi green or osmanthus tea, the karst silhouette darkening behind the hills.
Practical details
  • Logistics Private vehicle throughout — Guilin to Yangshuo 1.5 hrs; Yangshuo to Longji 2 hrs through the karst countryside. No public buses or shared shuttles on this route.
  • Gear Light hiking shoes with good grip for terrace stone paths — wet stone after rain is genuinely slippery. A collapsible trekking pole is useful on the steeper stairway sections. Packable rain layer year-round.
  • Accessibility Longji terrace viewpoints involve 300–800 stone steps depending on which viewpoints you reach. Not wheelchair-accessible. We calibrate the route to your group's fitness and available time.
Common questions

Before you book

What is the best time of year to visit Guilin?

April to June and September to November are ideal. Spring brings mist and green terraces; autumn brings golden harvest light on Longji. Avoid July–August (heavy rain and peak domestic crowds) and January–February (cold and grey).

Is this tour suitable for non-hikers?

Yes. The valley walks and bamboo rafting are gentle. The karst summit climb (Moon Hill or Xianggong) is optional — most fit adults manage it in 30–45 minutes, but we can skip it entirely. Longji involves stone steps; we recommend comfortable walking shoes.

How do we get from Guilin to Yangshuo and then to Longji?

All transfers are private vehicle, arranged by us. Guilin to Yangshuo is about 1.5 hours. Yangshuo to Longji terraces is around 2 hours, passing through the Guilin countryside.

Can we extend the itinerary or add extra nights?

Absolutely. Common extensions include an extra night in Yangshuo for a dawn Li River cruise by private boat, or a full day at Xingping village — the landscape on the 20 yuan note. Tell us what matters to you and we'll tailor accordingly.
