Planning your Guilin trip

01 When is the best time to visit Guilin?

April to June and September to early November. Spring brings the rice planting (terraces flood and shimmer like mirrors); late September/October brings the harvest (golden slopes before winter). Avoid July–August — heavy monsoon, limited karst visibility. Winter is quiet and atmospheric with morning mist over the Li River, just expect some days below 5°C.

02 Guilin vs Yangshuo — which should I base in?

Yangshuo, mostly. Guilin city is the transport hub but not the scenic experience; Yangshuo sits among the karst peaks, has quieter mornings, better cycling, and the Li River cruise ends there. We typically base in Yangshuo for 2–3 nights, do the Li River cruise from Guilin, then drive up to Longji for 1–2 nights of terrace views. Guilin city gets 1 night at the start or is skipped entirely if you fly in late.

03 How do I get to Guilin?

Direct flights from most major Chinese hubs land at Guilin Liangjiang (KWL), 45 minutes by road from Guilin city and 90 minutes to Yangshuo. From Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the high-speed rail takes 3–4 hours. From overseas, fly via Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, or Shenzhen.
