From the Snows of Cangshan to the Moon of Erhai
Dali weaves breathtaking landscapes and ancient heritage into a singular, immersive journey.

March to early June and September to mid-November. Spring brings cherry and rapeseed blooms across the Erhai shoreline; autumn is dry, warm, and ideal for the Cangshan mountain trails. Avoid Chinese summer holidays (mid-July to mid-August) when the lakeside cafés get crowded with domestic travellers. Dali sits at 2,000m and is mild year-round — even winter days hit 15°C.
Three to four days is the sweet spot. A full day in Xizhou for the Bai morning market and 500-year-old courtyards, a half-day on Erhai Lake (cycle, not bus), a half-day on the Cangshan ridge for views back over the water, and a day or two in Shaxi or the Weishan old town if you want a quieter base. Most guests pair Dali with Lijiang for a 7-day Yunnan culture loop.
Old Dali town has the most amenities but the most foot traffic; Xizhou is quieter, more authentic, and walkable to the morning market; lakeside villages on Erhai's west shore (Shuanglang, Wenbi) are calmest but need a driver for everything. We usually base guests in a Bai-style courtyard in Xizhou for the cultural immersion, with day trips to the lake and Cangshan.
Yes — it's the gentlest entry to Yunnan culturally and physically. Mild altitude (2,000m), temperate climate, easy walking pace, and Bai culture is more accessible than the higher-altitude Tibetan world up north. From Dali you can climb gradually to Lijiang (2,400m) and then Shangri-La (3,200m) without altitude shock. Direct high-speed train from Kunming takes 2 hours.
