Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li
A hand-picked boutique retreat
Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li is an all-villa hotel in Xuhui — 55 restored shikumen lane houses of one to three bedrooms, each with a private courtyard, living room and roof terrace. You walk the lanes to your own front door, the French Concession starts at the gate, and the Bund is about 20 minutes by car.
Capella Shanghai (上海建业里嘉佩乐酒店) occupies Jian Ye Li, one of the last intact clusters of shikumen lane houses in Xuhui, where 55 of the houses have been turned into villas — each with its own courtyard, living room and roof terrace over the grey-tile eaves. There is no tower and no lobby lift; you walk the lanes to your own front door. A Capella Personal Assistant runs the stay, Auriga is the spa, the restaurant is French, and the French Concession — plane trees, Wukang Road, 1920s villas — starts at the gate.

Staying at Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li
01 Where is Capella Shanghai and how do I get there?
It's at 480 West Jianguo Road in Xuhui, inside Jian Ye Li, a block of restored shikumen lane houses. The French Concession — plane trees, Wukang Road, the 1920s villas — starts at the gate, and the Bund is about 20 minutes by car, so this is a base for the city's slowest, most walkable quarter rather than the waterfront.
02 What are the villas like?
Every unit is a shikumen lane house turned villa, with one, two or three bedrooms, a private courtyard, a living room and a roof terrace over the grey-tile eaves. Because they are real lane houses, a villa is a multi-level home with stairs rather than a single-floor room. For a couple we usually book the Shikumen Garden Villa, about 110m² with a king bed.
03 Who is this stay best for?
Travellers who want a house of their own in old Shanghai's lanes — a private courtyard, the French Concession on foot and a Personal Assistant on call — and who don't mind a few stairs. It's one of the stays on our Classic China & Yunnan journey.
